That's a ridiculous comment. The parties of "sitting Presidents" often lose after a 2nd term in office. Other losses under those circumstances were Richard Nixon (1960), Gerald Ford (1976), and John McCain (2008).

Actually Bush in 1988 was the only President to win his party a third successive term since FDR. One or (increasingly) two terms in office has tended to be the norm since 1952.
