Fury erupted last week after the Home Office allowed dozens of child refugees in without through checks to determine their ages – after several migrants seemed to appear older than 18. The Home Office ruled out dental checks as being “too intrusive”, although similar checks are carried out in France and the US.
On radio, Nick Ferrari clashed with Josie Naughton, co-founder of Help Refugees UK, who defended the Home Office’s “investigations” into the age of migrants arriving in Britain. Discussing the subject on LBC, Ferrari said: “You’re telling me – particularly the man who looks like the footballer Mark Hateley – you’re telling me that you believe he is 18?” Ms Naughton responded: “I don’t know, the photograph – there was one photograph I believe was an interpreter…”
She was swiftly interrupted by the host who said a charity had issued a statement saying the “supposed child migrant” was not an interpreter and said he was older than his 26 and 30-year-old sons. The charity worker continued: “I trust that the Home Office know what they’re doing when they are registering children.”
Ferrari blasted: “Why do you trust? Why on earth do you trust that the Home Office knows what they are doing when palpably they are not!” Ms Naughton replied: “I believe that they do – and besides that…”
Ferrari interrupted: “Well I don’t see how we can pursue this conversation if you’re not prepared to accept the reality that those men, at least two of them, are nowhere near 18.”
After being asked to stop speaking, Ferrari added: “This colours public opinion to a degree in this country towards the whole idea and you in the important position you’re in – well, I’ve asked you four times to comment, so I hope it’s better than so far, but do go ahead.”
The charity worker said: “I was in camp this weekend, I spent my weekend with a 10-year-old unaccompanied boy from Afghanistan…” Angered by her response, the host blasts: “I’m sorry, you’re choosing to totally ignore this.
“How can we ensure the one’s that we now get in – like the 10-year-old and the others you have mentioned – are not people in their mid-twenties or early-thirties?” Ms Naughton continued: “The people that came over last week were not under the Dubs amendment, they were under Dublin free regulation, which is family unification.
In conclusion Ferrari said: “We absolutely agree that those kiddies need help, of course they do, but you can’t have these grown men coming in.
“What’s he going to do? He’s going to go to school now that man?
“It’s ridiculous. If you’re the co-founder of Help Refugees UK why aren’t you raising merry hell that the Home Office has brought the Home Office into absolute farce by allowing these men in?
“Shouldn’t you be screaming about this from the rooftops?
“We could have had one of those kids instead of this bloke… Why won’t you acknowledge the other problem?”
