Russian man on trial for 'no God' comment in internet chat MOSCOW — A Russian faces up to a year in prison for saying "there is no God" during an argument on social media, his lawyers said Wednesday. Viktor Krasnov also wrote the "Bible is a collection of Jewish fairy tales" during the discussion on European social networking site Vk.com in 2014, lawyer and human-rights activist Pavel Chikov posted on his Facebook page. Krasnov, whose offending posts have been deleted, is on trial in his native city of Stavropol in southern Russia, according to the local magistrate's website. Charges were filed in the fall of 2015 and the trial began on Monday, according to his lawyer. Russia's Investigative Committee — the equivalent of the FBI — charged Krasnov with "offending believers' feelings," which was criminalized in Russia after a notorious performance by punk band Pussy Riot in Moscow's Cathedral of Christ the Savior in February 2012. Two band members were jailed in 2012 for performing an anti-Vladimir Putin song at the cathedral. Anti-government news website Grani.ru reported Tuesday that Krasnov was forcibly subjected to a month-long psychiatric check during the investigation. He was was declared sane, according to the news website. "I don't know how you can treat social networking posts seriously," Grani.ru cited Krasnov as saying. "Looks like we need a law to protect atheists' feelings too." Krasnov and Chikov were not immediately available for comment. Dozens of Internet users faced criminal persecution for their online activity in recent years in Russia, which was downgraded to "non-free" for the first time by Freedom House rights watchdog in its 2015 installment of the "Freedom on the Net" rating. www.nbcnews.com/news/world/russian-faces-year-prison-denying-existence-god-n530111

This doesn't make sense to me. I thought "we" were the country that tried to force belief in God on people.

Christians have a large majority, here, but we do not arrest and jail non believers that speak out. The old USSR was supposed to be a godless country where they might have arrested Christians. Now that it's Russia again, they are just as harsh with non-Christians. I guess they are STILL against free speech.

Hi Mouse, people are making a big song and a dance about the necessity that freedom of speech thrives in this day and age. Like everything else, I think there should be limits to what we are allowed to say. So how do we approach this difficult problem of free speech?

So how do we approach this difficult problem of free speech? there should be NO limits on freedom of speech...there are NO DIFFICULT problems in regard to free speech....what there are are people who take freedoms and equate freedom with licence....and there are rulers/politos/religiosi who wish to prevent freedom of speech and who will take ANY opportunity to deprive people of the freedom to speak in that freedom of speech comes up with some very difficult questions which certain people have no wish to answer why any one would wish to deprive us all of the freedom to speak is beyond me...I have no problems with anyones adult freedoms to speak... licence however is a totally different matter as for you being like every one else in wanting to limit free speech...well sorry but not every one wishes to limit such freedom...so that is a very wrong assumption on your part

we approach this difficult problem of free speech? Why is free speech a problem? The more the better, I say. At least in my country. I don't care about yours.

Free Speech comes hand in hand with responsibility. Making claims that are not true or slandering go beyond the limits. Instigating mob violence is another use of "free speech" that is out of bounds.

The old USSR was supposed to be a godless country where they might have arrested Christians. Now that it's Russia again, they are just as harsh with non-Christians. I guess they are STILL against free speech. The Russian Orthodox Church has - since the fall of communism - become very political, remember the protest by Pussy Riot? The women from the band "Pussy Riot" face up to seven years in prison for an unsanctioned performance in February in which they entered Moscow's Christ the Saviour Cathedral, ascended the altar and called on the Virgin Mary to "throw Putin out!"in.reuters.com/article/entertainment-us-russia-pussyriot-trial-idINBRE86S0AZ20120730The corruption between church and state is second to none. That a man is on trial for stating the glaringly obvious - there is no god - comes as no great surprise.
