The entire country is on alert for power surges, internet blackouts and chaos on the roads from 9.30am tomorrow as the moon passes in front of the sun. But according to some religious commentators the timing - coming just a fortnight before the spring equinox brings a sinister ‘blood moon’ - is extremely significant.
They claim the combined phenomenon is a "once in 100,000-year" event which was foretold in Holy scripture. Pastor Mark Blitz said: “As the Bible tells us, there will be signs in the heavens on the feast days, and this is a very significant sign on a critical day. “It’s the same day that there was the grand-opening ceremony of the tabernacle of Moses, with fire from heaven lighting the altar.
“An event of this magnitude at the very beginning of the religious new year demands attention.” The Bible also warns “the sun shall be turned into darkness, and the moon into blood, before the great and the terrible day of the Lord comes”.
Tomorrow’s event could also spark strange weather events across the country including unexplained winds and plunging temperatures. On August 11, 1999, during the last total solar eclipse west country residents reported an “eerie” change in wind direction as the region was plunged into total darkness.
Devon and Cornwall fell into a so-called ‘zone of totality’ where all direct sunlight was blocked by the moon’s shadow. Scientists later discovered it was caused by a sudden cooling of the Earth’s surface leading to a rare “eclipse wind”. Dr Suzanne Gray, senior lecturer at the Department of Meteorology at the University of Reading, said: "Although eclipses are known to cause temperature changes, any wind effects have been less clear.
Giles Harrison, professor of atmospheric physics, said: "We've been able to demonstrate that subtle changes in the winds really did occur in 1999 associated with the post-eclipse cooling. "Our new approach works by comparing the latest high-definition weather model predictions for the same day without an eclipse with the observations actually obtained at many UK measurement sites."
