Cardinals are pretty tough little birds. They are our state bird. I saw a robin this a.m.. He was perched on top of my trash can lid but took off for the trees as soon as he saw me. Robins and Cardinals stay year round during mild winter like this one has been. Hi Beth, I've never heard of a Cardinal, but a Robin is certainly associated with Winter. I can only remember seeing them in Scotland when there was snow on the ground. Delightful little birds for sure.!!! I don't ever remember seeing them here in Australia. As I live on the coast there are plenty of seagulls flying around especially in the city.

I'm surprised you don't have Cardinals in Australia, Lassie. They are very common here. The male is red and the female is a light fawn color with a light red breast.
They are song birds and the sound is often like "cheer cheer cheer" or sometimes "birdie, birdie, birdie". Easy to recognize.
Robins are very common here, too, and also nice song birds.

lots of birds around ..including chaffinches and green finches which I haven't sen for a couple of years its been a mildish wet winter without the constant hard frosts and freezing..and of course without the snow..so no bad weather killing off lots of preenings and mating dances..especially the wood pigeons ...much tail faning and wing flapping.... the nest above my bedroom window underneath the eaves is being added to and repaired ready for the eggs which will be laid ..lots of activity by the male blackbird who seems to do all the work ...I wont know about any hatchings until I hear the chirrups of hatchlings ...hopefully none will fall out of the nest and none will get attacked by the magpies and jackdaws this year the only one I haven't seen is the woodpecker.....
