When I was a child, l these were called red headed woodpeckers. They loved the birch trees and their pecking around the trunks for food was very common to hear. I have not seen or heard them for a long time. The video is nice.

my ex daughter in law in Wales has several woodpeckers which come to her bird feeders...last time I was there I saw four two at one feeder and two at another feeder... we get the odd visit from a woodpecker during the winter months...they are very timid around here and fly off at the slightest movement

Audubon site has a lot of good bird calls. Not fancy but the calls are really nice and clear. Cardinals, Robins, Sparrows and the Thrush seem to be the ones I hear out back most of the time. Also, Robins. I have not found a Robin call on this site yet but it has to be there somewhere. We haven't seen any huge flocks of migrating birds flying over yet. That usually happens here around Thanksgiving (end of Nov.). I'm surprised it hasn't started already this year. Darned cold out there. Very quiet out there today. No bird calls at all. birds.audubon.org/birdid/quick-guide

I put out two feeders..one of peanuts and one of mixed seed,,,so far have not seen any bird use either of them..i remember last year and the year before complaining about the lack of birds
one Robin did alight onto the shed roof..but other than that not a sign of the smaller birds...tits/finches etc ..the larger ones too are very thin on the ground..blackbirds/jays/magpies etc/// still far too many jackdaws/doves and wood pigeons...perhaps when its colder

the bird seed is at last being eaten...even though I haven't seen any birds feeding..so perhaps its country mice running up and helping them selvesd the robin is still around and I have seen one or two blue tits flying around

We still have a few cardinals but they are not singing. When the winter is relatively mild, we get some that stay over. Otherwise we are just a stop and rest point on their way further south.

There were two cardinals, a male and a female, flitting through the tree branches in the back yard this morning. Their feathers were all fluffed out against the cold. I hope they have a warm place to go for the night.

a neighbour was given a very brightly painted miniature house..roof windows and shutters etc ...which actually is a nesting box...a little blue tit laid her eggs in it just over a week ago...we are all longing to see the baby birds[if they hatch]before the hatchlings she and I were putting buts of wool/dog hair etc in obvious places for the bird to put in her nest[and she did]so heres hoping they are all warm and cosy and surviving...mother bird is certainly working hard flying in and out..so there must be at least one baby
the nest above my window is very active with the adult birds flying in an out...haven't heard any small chirrupings as yet...though the adult birds are making quite a lot of noise

This year we have a very feisty Robin chirping away and lots of great tits. On the common the woodpeckers come and go - do they ever get a headache?! - and recently one or two hawks have taken up residence. I haven't got much of a look as they soar quite high up. I'm not familiar with their calls, but there's no mistaking a bird of prey.
We have Crows, Jackdaws, Blackbirds and Magpies aplenty too - all driving the cat loopy!

we have an almost constant presence of a Buzzard some times a pair....and theres usually a hawk around..they put the smaller birds into terror....although the herons don't appear to mind as they go from pond to pond they circle around and then watching them drop is amazing...they've takes a number of wood pigeon this last few weeks....until the cat situation resolves its self...I don't think we will see much bird life in the gardens...which is a pity....but no good putting food out so they are more vunerable and easier for the cats to grab

Not if it moves for sure. Maxx has gotten so pathetic his favorite thing is shadows and squirrels the other side of the storm porch windows. The little round blue or red lights can't be beat though.
