www.telegraph.co.uk/news/politics/local-elections/10851024/Elections-2014-Ukip-earthquake-rocks-Labour-and-Tories.htmlUkip’s “political earthquake” has rocked the Conservatives and Labour, with Nigel Farage’s party taking dozens of seats from Britain’s main parties. Mr Farage’s party has taken dozens of council seats from the Tories and Labour, dominating the south and making serious inroads in Labour’s northern heartlands. With over a third of councils having declared, Ukip had gained nearly a hundred seats - already exceeding expectations of around 80 wins. By 6am on Friday, with 100 of the 172 councils up for election in England and northern Ireland still to declare, the Tories had lost 93 seats, Labour gained 74, the Lib Dems lost 72, Ukip gained 84, the Greens gained one and other parties were up seven

It'll be the usual hand-wringing and "how dare people exercise their democratic choice" like when the BNP won MEP seats. Will be interesting to see the Euro results on Monday; how many seats have fallen to UKIP domestically and how many to anti-EU/mass migration parties across Europe.

As I predicted above - the usual hand-wringing. Cammiknickers, Smegg, Millibandwagon, Balls-Up; all the "big hitters" giving it "Well, this clearly shows blah, blah but we've got x councils from the others/improved our vote share in marginals/insert spin here" but demonstrating that they're still not listening and couldn't give a stuff about the electorates concerns, mainly because they've still got their heads wedged firmly up their arseholes.
So, this clearly shows that the Westminster parties need a similar shoeing in twelve months.

UKIP have won more seats than before but their share of the vote was only 17%. The Lib Dems in spite of losing seats polled 13% and did better than they might have feared.
And London continued to buck the trend by voting for the three main parties. UKIP made almost no impact on London.
In our local council ward they did not even put up a candidate though of course they did put up a candidate as MEP for whom Lin and I duly voted.
So I'd call it more of a slight tremor than an earthquake.

It remains true that UKIP (in spite of winning more seats) failed to poll as strongly as it hoped and its performance in London was abject.
In Lambeth for instance they could only manage 2% of the vote!

Other factors include but are not limited to them not fielding candidates in all wards - if there's no candidate then you can't vote for them - and this cycle being mainly concentrated in urban areas. Last time the seats were mostly in the shires and more were up for grabs. Relative to the last local elections this one was more a case of new seats being fought over; these seats weren't included last time when UKIP took 25% of the vote.
A more accurate barometer would be to add all the votes cast for each party in the last and this local election together and then work out the shares and total turnout, which will then give an indication as if the whole country elected its councillors in one fell swoop. I might look into it later if I get time...

Rather prescient of me above - they're still trying to get a result in Tower Hamlets, with accusations of rampant fraud being bandied about and questions asked of the Electoral Commission.
Meanwhile, Cammiknickers seems determined to play the man rather than the ball and has come out and outright insulted Fromage, his party and everyone who had the temerity to vote UKIP. Must have a very small penis...
