There is a growing tendency - perhaps an aspect of the Twitter culture - to use acronyms for almost everything.
I vividly recall a few years ago having to enquire what POTUS and SCOTUS stood for.
Today I discovered yet another one relating to Michelle Obama who is apparently FLOTUS!
One wonders why there is this obsession with adopting a minimalist approach to language.

hmmm ... well, twitter hasn't been around all that long, acronyms have been common much longer. I started using the PC for various communications and managing discussion forums in 1992 ... no WWW but it was on its way. We had the big pay sites (like AOL, only much nicer) and FTP storage sites. There were also lots of local BBSes ... some so popular people would dial in from all over the US and pay the LD charges to use them. Last but not least were the News Groups (FIDO, etc). Very addictive and mostly free. Those places are where the common and constant use of acronyms began. I use them (and JosephD occasionally fusses at me ) because it simply helps expedite the conversations, and I have no problem when others use them.

Ye Cliamte Sceance is riddled with them But the sceptics go one better - NIPCC - The Non-Governmental Panel on Climate Change Originally called "Team B," NIPCC was created to provide an independent "second opinion" on the topics addressed by the initial drafts of the IPCC's Fourth Assessment Report. When the Summary for Policymakers of that report was released in February 2007, "Team B" met again, this time in Vienna, changed its name to NIPCC, and started work on what would become this report. A score of independent scientists from around the world began to share their research and ideas with Dr. Singer, as they continue to do. Some of these scientists have asked not to be named in NIPCC reports for fear of losing research grants and being blacklisted by professional journals.www.nipccreport.org/about/about.htmlMcCarthyism is alive and well
