we took a tour of the town hall...starting with the outside.. the TH is in the centre of Manchester..built in the 1870s when cotton was king its gothic in style and has been used in various films..jack the ripper/harry potter among others its a Victorian extravaganza of marble ..stone..wood..with more statues of worthies and mosaics and tiling galore this pic shows a corner of the TH we visited..the new town hall a little of the round central and reference liberary and just a wee bit of the hotel we had our morning coffee before starting the tour the walkways between the old TH and the new town hall on the right the TH FRONTS ON TO ALBERT SQUARE..named for the prince consort..his statue is in the middle of the square along with the statues of other manc worthies..Dalton Bright etc

the main enterance is quite imposing...the front of the TH has always been a good place to meet friends if they were coming from different directions of the city...as there was always plenty of shelter from the weather[manc is notorious for its wet] I once saw the queen peeping out of the bay window to the left on one of her visits north...queen Victoria dint care for manchester the clock tower..similar to big ben the soldier carved here is general worsley from the civil war..cant remember who the other two are..but local lads made good all local familys are dotted around..the Heywoods..Mossleys..Brightsights.. remembered in the areas they owned and all have streets named after them..ie the worsleys of worsley and the barlows of barlow moor....and of course the kings of cotton are well to the fore

there are inner courtyards..through which the carriages used to deliver the worthy lord mayor and his ilk..and too many leaded windows to count all would be very spooky during a Manchester fog we decided the inner courtyards could do witj a damned good clean
