As Time Goes By (Herman Hupfeld) is older than Casablanca being part of a Broadway show score in 1931 - it was given a new lease of life by its use in the film.

Jerome Kern/Oscar Hammerstein II (1939)
Such a fine song it could even survive Peter Sellers's version...

lol He sounds like Dudley Moore in Arthur. Jo Stafford had a very nice voice.

Thanks for that, Jessie. I like Whiffenpoof, too. When I was a teen, my dad sometimes asked me to play a few piano pieces for company - softly for background music. This was frequently one of the lineup. I'd like to hear a King's Singers version but am not sure they ever recorded it.

Another fine standard, if a tad over dramatic was Temptation
But then Red Ingle recorded his hillbilly version - vocal by Cinderella G Stump - here complete with false start for some reason.

Thanks for the bread crumbs. That's kind of amazing. I don't understand why she wouldn't just use her best known name while changing styles. This way, she kept people from knowing how multi-faceted she really was.

Jonathan and Darlene evolved as a stunt Jo and Paul would perform at parties - much as the Gershwins, George and Ira, used to perform comic songs like By Strauss at friends' functions. I always admired Paul Weston's portrayal of the terrible pianist - it was absolutely authentic!

I think some of Elton John's songs have turned into standards. Here are 2.

They sound like standards to me, Dex, but I think most of the recognized standards have had at least a half century (or more) to ripen into that designation.
This, for example, is a true standard that has been around long enough, virtually everyone knows it and many people have recorded it.
