OK, back down the hill - in some ways this is more spectacular Brilliant ride! So, back down to the main area - down that road again... Safely down; now a walking tour Once again we find ourselves looking towards the Faragliones - this is, I think, the classic Capri image Via Krupp again - from the top! A couple more images of the Faragliones Heading back to the square At this point the wallet started gibbering, shaking & trying to hide... There is a funicular down to the harbour, but it's very busy, & we had a minibus laid on. Still, worth a look A final look at the hills we'd ascended The eagle-eyed will be able to make out the road up to Ana Capri that we'd taken... And so, back to Sorrento Sadly, the following morning was the start of our journey home, but there were still a couple of gems to reveal themselves to us.

Thursday morning. All loaded up & now homeward bound... A last view of Sorrento - note the cruise ship recently arrived in the bay. And Vesuvius is passed for the last time Leaving the Naples area, we head north-west Vineyards Another town on a hill We stopped at a service station in Montepulciano One of our favourite wines is Montepulciano d'Abrusso...

Ah yes, wine... Would have been churlish not to get some, so... A handy carry pack of 2x red, 1x rosé & 1x white and a single bottle of red well, actually, it's a jeroboam if using champagne/burgundy measure, or a double magnum if using bordeaux-speak! Whatever; it's 4 'normal' bottles! That's some of the Xmas booze sorted out

I hope I've not bored everyone with these pics... Anyway, Friday and time to head for the mountains... Off after breakfast from Montecatini Terme, & initially head in a generally westerly direction, towards the Mediterranean coast again Remember the brief glimpse of an aqueduct severed by the road? Here's a better view of it from the other side Dropping down to the coast - here's that lake again, with the sea in the distance Turning north-west, we headed towards La Spezia, then just before getting there, turned north-east & set course towards Milan. Again, this road is spectacular Just before Milan, we cross the Po The bridge in the distance carries the Milan-Rome high speed railway The Milan telecoms tower Leaving yet another toll booth - last one in Italy Lake Como Swiss border approaches Starting the climb Lake Lugano again We now climb in earnest On the right you can see where the railway does a loop in a tunnel, in order to gain height It being Friday, traffic was building up as we approached the Gotthard Tunnel. It was reported that there were 90 minute delays before entering the tunnel, so our driver took us 'over the top'. Enjoy We now meet some really crazy road as we climb away from Airolo - have a look on a map to see what I mean!

Last leg in sight now. On the way down we'd come past Strasbourg & Alsace, but on the way back we were to head through Lorraine until we rejoined our original route at Metz Back on the road We turned west, 7 passed through this tunnel, which links Alsace & Lorraine. We were heading for Loonyville, according to our driver! He did, of course, mean Lunéville Next was Nancy, which you can see in the distance. The road swings round to the west of Nancy We followed the Moselle to Metz Then headed to Zeebrugge Our coach waiting to be loaded And manoeuvring on board, reversing down the linkspan and off to Hull, arriving on Sunday morning. Here's the lock We actually went in stern first, which felt very strange. We dragged along the knuckle as we came in Thank goodness for rubbing strakes! Anyway, safely in, & here's our ferry terminal in the distance, almost 15 days after setting off The last couple of hours back to Darlington was quiet, & we arranged for #2 son to collect us & take us back to Durham. What a wonderful couple of weeks. Would we do it again? Hell, yes! smiley 1
