So you would be afraid if you were single.... Sure, there are lot of unknowns when you're single, and single people do not go through the fire the way marrieds do. If a man can survive a woman, he can survive anything.

My wife is afraid of bats. There's some woods over at the side of our yard. In the summertime, bats will fly out of there around sunset. Not a lot but 2 or 3. She thinks they might land in her hair.

My mother's always been afraid of moths but not butterflies. Eklaine Morgan says the commonest fears, snake and spiders, go back to a marine phase when eels and crabs were worth being afraid of - Pacific spider crab can get to a legspan near 20 foot. Dunno about that, but I keep random screensavers and one came up that gave me the right creeps. It was presumably on octopus off-screen with just some nasty green-purple tentacles showing. They can get big too, even ones that are not deep-water squid.
Distinguish between fear and phobia where there's an irrational element of horror and maybe disgust. I dislike and have mostly been scared of dogs, but they don't make my skin crawl or stick in my mind and it's a quite rational fear compared to getting the creeps over something you could hold on your hand - Yeeugh!

Fear of failure is a phobia I think, and it is the cause of a lot of inertia. It's closely linked to the fear of criticism and fear or rejection. It causes people not to try ... not to go after a life goal unless it's a sure thing. Getting past it means breaking out of our comfort zones and moving into the "great unknown" to test the possibilities and see how much we can accomplish. I have to add this (some of you have already heard it) because it's all about pushing the limits and daring to risk failure.

You're right there Mouse. I had a friend who after settling into a job for a couple of weeks would start to play up until they fired her. Her explanation always was that she had tried before and then got hammered for some oversight when she had been doing her best. So better to sod it up on her terms than try on theirs and still get kicked up the crotch.
I used to feel slightly sorry for her at the time, but since then I've realised that she and a friend who dropped out to live on the dole and LSD had it right, and I was the patsy exploited by and for The System with nothing in the end to show for it because I depended on qualifications and doing a good job instead of ripping them off faster than could do me.
Hippies were idealists: punks were realists.

Hippies were idealists: punks were realists. Not sure I agree, Erasmus. That sounds more like fear of success. *** Interestingly, fear of failure does appear to be connected to the fear of success. Research has shown that both conditions share many of the same symptoms. Both are marked by anxiety symptoms in certain situations, such as tests and job interviews. Both conditions can be crippling, leading the sufferer to take few risks and make only safe, conservative choices. Fear of success also appears to be related to the level of control that the sufferer feels in his or her own life. Those who feel that external forces are in control tend to be at a higher risk for fear of success. It could be that they do not feel that their success has been earned, or it could be that they fear outside situations are taking away that success. *** phobias.about.com/od/introductiontophobias/a/fearoffailure.htm

I am reminded of Crowley's pun 'the way to succeed and the way to suck eggs.'
(I'm sure we understand his reference but if not most of the board members will probably enlighten the minority who don't!)
