I read an article last night about efforts to preserve a 19th century London marketplace instead of razing it for a new more streamlined shopping area. A commentor said - "Relic of the past which is now not a reflection of it's modern day inhabitants. I don't know why UK is so attached to old historical buildings ..." A link to the article is below, but this is just an illustration of UK interest in preserving the past. What IS the point and why are the English so intent on living with moldy oldies rather than taking a few photos, giving them a proper send off and moving on? www.theguardian.com/culture/2013/jul/21/smithfield-market-heritage-development-corporation

Maybe because we're not a bunch of introverted, feeble, spineless, navel-gazing, ankle-grabbing morons. Unlike the author of this comment and others of its ilk.

ha! Don't hold back TF. Say what you really think!
I kind of agree with you, though maybe not so deeply felt.
Selling one's heritage is almost like selling one's soul, eh?

Some buildings are not only worth keeping, in a sense they are timeless.

It's important to know where we've come from so as not to repeat the mistakes of the past going forward. Imagine if we removed all evidence of WW2 and people suddenly grew up with no knowlede of the Holocaust and someone with the gift of the gab who really wanted to be in charge popped up and started scapegoating people to achieve power...

I'd be moderated if I posted what I really think!

True, besides which, it's often fascinating. Have you ever dabbled in Alternative History? althistory.wikia.com/wiki/Main_Page

Ha! I believe that ... absolutely. I've known a couple of people who had Alt History as a hobby. Very cool but it works better if you have a mind that compartmentalizes information. I'm just a little too scattered for that.

"""""What IS the point and why are the English so intent on living with moldy oldies rather than taking a few photos, giving them a proper send off and moving on?"""" it could be that the English actually have a past...unlike the British so loved by the PC ..left and wooley yohurt knitters I don't think they're talking about it from a political stand point but in regard to preserving ruins and buildings left from another time, rather than clearing them out for progress. It means the difference between updating things like the old marketplace yet leaving them in their original form rather than razing them, and replacing them with a modern structure. I'm a little torn on this one. The old architecture in the pictures is interesting but when you consider it was largely a meat market ... wellll ... maybe the best thing would be to change it out altogether. In cases where food is not involved, I'd say keep the old and respect it.

don't think its just a political stand point...in the kings chapel Windsor there are many old army banners many of which regiments etc are still in existence or have been amalgamated..pride of regiment is a very UK attitude regardless of which bit of the UK you come from and all those English banners at KINGS ARE PRECIOUS AND HAVE THE NAMES OF VARIOUS BATTLES UPON THEM..ONDERMAN..SEBASTAPOOL..DUNKIRK...they would and do mean nothing to the jhonnycome latelies[sorry not shouting my finger slipped] the old market at convent garden there are still families who have ties to the place or cockneys..they still exist just not where they were ....we have ties to every thing in this country..by surnamesa..regions history its self.....commonalities going back centuries...some one who has no ties is obviously not going to feel the same
plus of course many old buildings are a joy and no comparison to the the bland and uninspiring constructs of today
