chef I told you a long time ago how envious I am of your piece of coal. Chuck it over the back fence along with the book on the Titanic. Please. I know this isn't a new book but since we're on the topic. dewey are you defiant or definite? This is a real ripper on the Titanic. I have both of Walter Lord's and he was pretty good, given that they were written so long ago. Unsinkable The Full Story of RMS TitanicDaniel Allen Butler, Stackpole Books, 1998. If you're interested in her, you won't put this book down. His notes on the chapters are full of extra info and the appendices contains a psych eval of Smith and his actions that night. It's a great read.

Somewhat sad also, knowing that so many lives were lost. They had a replica of the grand staircase and all kinds of items that had been brought up from the wreckage site. When you bought your ticket they gave you a card with a passengers name and a brief history of them. Then at the end of the exhibit you got to see if that person lived or perished. My person was a first class passenger named Eleanor Widener and she survived.

I am so far off the topic new books but WTH. You might be interested in this piece of trivia. The Wideners hosted a party for Captain Smith in honour of his retirement the night the Titanic and the iceberg collided. Smith left the party around 9pm and went to the bridge, before he retired at 9.30pm.
He was back 2 hours later.

Off topic.........yes, but in a good way. Perhaps we need a topic dedicated to the Titanic.

Good idea! OK, you have your topic (Ages Past). You're welcome to start a Titanic thread any time you like.

Has anyone read the Laura Bush book yet - or are you reading it? Though I lean left, I like Laura and have liked her all along. One of our better first ladies, I think. One of the interesting points is her apparent belief that she, her husband and most of the U. S. delegation were victims of deliberate food poisoning during the 2007 G8 Summit in Germany. I plan on reading this one, but will wait until I can find a used one.
Even though I dislike "W", I always liked Laura Bush and Barbara Bush. I saw Laura on the Oprah and Today shows and she seems to be a very down to earth type person.
Has anyone read the Palin book yet? I have friend who got it for a gift and is going loan it to me. I am not a Palin fan at all, but I figure it will be an interesting read.

I feel the same way about Palin - have had a chance to get this one on loan from a friend. But, she didn't read it all the way through our of boredom, so I'm reluctant to jump in. The Laura Bush book I'll definitely read - though I'll wait for a used or library copy.

Paulo Coelho's The Alchemist is out in its 10th anniversary edition. I read it in '08 and loved it. Rather than risk tossing out spoilers, I'm going to add this review that provides just enough information and leaves a lot to the reader to discover. Has anyone else read this? Review Paulo Coelho's enchanting novel has inspired a devoted following around the world, and this tenth anniversary edition, with a new introduction from the author, will only increase that following. This story, dazzling in its powerful simplicity and inspiring wisdom, is about an Andalusian shepherd boy named Santiago who travels from his homeland in Spain to the Egyptian desert in search of a treasure buried in the Pyramids. Along the way he meets a Gypsy woman, a man who calls himself king, and an alchemist, all of whom point Santiago in the direction of his quest. No one knows what the treasure is, or if Santiago will be able to surmount the obstacles along the way. But what starts out as a journey to find worldly goods turns into a discovery of the treasures found within. Lush, evocative, and deeply humane, the story of Santiago is an eternal testament to the transforming power of our dreams and the importance of listening to our hearts. Borders has the paperback at a good price Here

Has anyone read The Help by Kathryn Stockett? I just finished this book this morning. Loved it!!!!
It is set back in the 1960's in Mississippi and is about the treatment of black maids by the white women that they work for. It also touches on the "pecking" order of society. I couldn't put it down, the best book I have read in ages.

Supposed to be about 1950's baseball...... Hard to say. It might be pretty decent if you like King's writing style. Maybe it's a kind of nostalgia piece taken from childhood memories. A few years ago, John Grisham wrote a book called, A Painted House, that had not one single trial, but concentrated on a family of cotton farmers in the deep south during the early 1950s. I like his court case books pretty well, but APH is one of my all time favorite reads. His narrative is wonderful, with characters so vivid I'll never forget them. Now, that's a good book. Maybe I'll give Blockade Billy a look.

So what are anyone's thoughts on Joe McGinnis moving next door to the Palin's to do his book on the her?
You know.....I'm not a fan of hers.......and it is already well known that he is not a fan of hers so you know it is not going to be anything nice.....and that he is going to have a very jaded opinion of anything he writes or sees.....
But if it was me.....and I had someone that I knew detested me......move next to me.....that had his media contacts and was going to print everything he saw to the world......I would be ticked off also.....especially with him being able to see into my daughter's bedroom.....I'm not calling him a pervert.....just.....ewwwwww......and the family pool......again....ewwwwwww
You are never going to be comfortable in your own home....on your own property and that is just wrong......and I think it was a really crappy thing of McGinnis to do.

I seriously doubt that Sarah minds the attention that she is getting from her new neighbor . Regardless of what she claims.......she loves any attention she gets from the media.

I don't think he detests her - doubt he has any personal feelings toward her at all. McGinnis is a professional - been at it for a long time. IOW, he's no whack-O. I think he will write, based on facts and his own perception. Could have been someone much worse.
