Hi Fretslider, You got to be kidding.!!! What was it that happened to that young woman in India? besides being gang raped, the men used a metal bar to rip up her insides. Are you still unable to envisage what a carrot can be used for? Perhaps the 'Crudeness alert' was wasted on you? Hi Fretslider, I guess so!!!. Which means ofcourse that you are not as naive as you were trying to make out. Oh well.!!! We win some and we lose some. That's life.!!!

The things that some men do is really sickening and hard to believe, as in that particular case in India. I've never known anything like it. Apparently crude locker room talk is commonplace as it is passed off as just banter, and nothing to worry too much about. In my book it is disgusting and definitely should not be happening.

Because of what has been in the news lately, I thought it was impossible for you not to know the possible use for carrots, my mistake.!!!

Talk is often contextual and we all talk with each other in different ways during the day as we travel from one ‘context’ to another. What is said in one context as normal communication may be considered crude in another. Things said in some contexts may be totally lacking in understanding in another context. And this is not just a ‘male thing.’ Nor are these differences simply differing views on crude or not crude as they can be quite different within occupational differences.
Here within the internet we have an added challenge in that we may all be coming from different contexts, with different goals, and different understandings of life, and yet try to talk with each other here as if this were a singular context.
For example, many who come here are very familiar and at ease existing within a texting world of abbreviations and acronyms and using those little faces and signs to convey meanings and tones of feelings, I’m not. Add to that the reality that we come from different ages, different societies, and different education, and different political philosophies, and are sometimes used to using different languages, and then add to that that we all will sometimes assume a basic understanding by others in what we are referring to and left unsaid, and it is a wonder that we can communicate to any degree. Of course, that is all based on assumptions that we are all telling the truth and not trying to create a false image.
The title of this thread is apropos.

What a thoroughly intelligent and rational post. I wish more posters recognised that we are different not simply as individuals but in terms of our upbringing, our culture, our ethos and our life experiences and our use of language. An exalt for such an excellent post, Randy!

Hi Mouse,I was unaware there WAS such a thing as locker room talk until Donald Trump used that expression. At no time did I lend myself to gutter talk, I wouldn't know how to do that, as I never grew up with that kind of thing going on in my life. A way of talking is handed down from generation to generation, so it evidently was unknown in the Robertson/Tait family. Not in the Dengler/Robertson family either. Gutter talk pollutes the mind and I certainly would not ever do that to myself. I care about myself as I care about others. So would not subject anyone to that.

I didn't grow up with either locker room or gutter talk..no swearing or coarseness of any kind and the same goes for millions of us...however because we didn't grow up with doesn't mean we didn't know about it or that it didn't happen I didn't grow up with incest peadophillia either but it doesn't mean that ive been un aware ..same goes for Crime its about being aware of society beyond the boundries of family how can any one live their live in society without being aware of the wider society.. """" A way of talking is handed down from generation to generation"""actually your quite wrong on that .. quite often talk within the family can be totally different to the talk out side among males in the workplace the same goes for women... an example isson 1 I have never heard him swear...yet he is ex army and wouldn't be immune from barrack room talk

Hi Mouse, I was talking about family members. If crude talk is used or swearing the next generation will follow suit, it is unavoidable. I just have never been in the company of anyone who has spoken in a crude manner, so how would I know about it if I have never heard it.
If young people hear crude talk outside the family they can make the decision to talk in a similar manner when in the company of their friends. I'm not one of those. If anyone were to speak crudely in my company I would make myself scarce immediately. I wouldn't be hanging around, that's for sure.!!!

seems to me your life has been very inward looking totally ignoring the wider community and society and what has gone on in the world Quite how you have managed it I really don't understand as the outside world and society intrudes in to every day life especially given the information that's been available during your life time to only become aware of locker room via Trump standing for election is amazing and almost unbelievable ...
""" I was talking about family members. If crude talk is used or swearing the next generation will follow suit""" it doesn't follow that the next generation will follow...many times the next generation will deliberately choose the opposite norms that they grew up with
