I always bought the children's Christmas toys at F.A.O. Schwarz from babyhood until they were 10 and moving away from toys to games and sports. I am not sure but Schwarz may have gone out of business. They had really fabulous toys in their day. I depend on Toys R Us and Amazon for the grandchildren's gifts.

What if, the electricity went off or you had run out of batteries or the big toy store was closed. Your child wants a toy to play with and all you had were the things around the house. What would you do? Well, you could just tell the child that sorry, there aren’t any toys. Or, look around the house and . . . . . . make some toys. Here is a link to do just that. www.rd.com/home/17-easy-toys-you-can-make-at-home/

Has anyone ever thought about having a neighborhood get together in the park for games and toys from the past. Races which combine adults and kids such as human wheelbarrow races, the three legged races, the bag race, egg on a spoon race, no electronic games need apply. They do that here on 4th of July and Labor Day. Then in the evening they have fireworks and a live band playing. Very popular.

My parents got Schwarz toys for us now and then. My brother had a very elaborate castle when he was about 10. Over 3 ft. high with all kinds of turrets, a drawbridge & moat. Thornbury's was another good toy store, no longer in business. I did not buy toys as elaborate as all that for my own children, but they always had what they needed to have a good time.

we have those things at our annual village gala day.... they are imencely popular along with a cocoanut shy the best present my children had was a box of wooden building bricks my eldest son was given...we kept them and the grandchildren have loved them as well anf now they are boxed waiting for the next generation its all about keeping a sence of proportion and mixing the new electronics with traditional toys ... there ample room for both Wooden blocks have never gone out of style. My little girl and her friends play with them a lot. she gets to use her Kindle a couple of hours a day on weekends and one hour a day on pre-school days. The rest of the time is active play with her best friends, the boy and girl next door. That will probably step up with elec. devices when she starts 1st grade. There, they receive awesome elec. pads with all kinds of activities. wooden blocks gone out of style...not over here they haven't...though quite a lot depends where you shop but they are available

A sheet of good weight white bond paper works very well. That also gives them the opportunity to use crayons to add a design. My nephew played with these when he was 4, 5 and 6. Made up all kinds of games. I remember there were occasional mishaps when the planes "crashed" into cups of liquid, but overall they were one of his favorite toys. We got him a real mini drone when he was 10 (he's 11 now), but it was nowhere near as much fun.

Paper airplanes are one of the best homemade toys --- although one can also buy large paperback books of deisgner models.

They are in fact learning tools.
A piece of paper
A bit of cloth
A block of wood.
Think of the child playing with just different sizes of blocks of wood. He/she makes a building, decides to make the walls tall enough that door will have to be put in. The child has walked through the doors in your house uncounted of times, but now he/she is building one. Here the learning could be the realization that the the wall goes over the top of the door. More the learning is that it is best to use a single block that is anchored on both sides of the top of the door. Your child has just constructed a lintel. A necessary part of construction for thousands years. But this wasn't told to the child, the learning was through the child's own hands and brain. Something that will never be forgotten.
That is why these 'toys' (tools?) are so important, they are part of the first steps in the world of reality.
