Well, I SHOULD have been back on board this morning... However, I'm sat in a hotel in Oslo, going back to Amsterdam later & from there to Flushing to wait for the ship to arrive. This is because my flight from Oslo to Haugesund last night got caught up with some serious thunderstorm activity over Haugesund - we actually got hit at one point - and we diverted back to Oslo because the storm parked itself directly over the airport & showed no sign of moving in a hurry. No further flights last night, & the first one this morning won't get me to the port before the ship sails, so next port it has to be. Hey ho! Wow Mark! Thank goodness the flight landed intact! No rushes, just take care of you whenever possible!

Modern aircraft are pretty well protected against lightning strikes - well, aluminium ones for sure; I'm still not 100% convinced about these carbon-fibre jobbies... - but it was the presence of the storm cells, with potential microbursts and/or windshear, that was the biggie (think Dallas-Fort Worth a few years ago...). Definitely a night for being on the ground, wishing you were flying, than being in the air, wishing you were on the ground

I know. I don't have an irrational fear of flying but can do without the storms. My daughter was coming in from the west coast a few years ago with a couple of hours layover in Chicago. She called me and bubbled .. "Mommy! Guess what! We were struck by lightning! It was too cool!" arrrrrrrrrrrrgh

Nice tolerance! I think sunny snowdays with no wind aren't too awfully bad even at 30 degrees but I would not be out there long! I have a friend in Alabama. She complains fiercely about the insects there ... also the foliage that needs constant attention. As an Ohio transplant, she may never get used to life in that kind of climate. i don't mind it, but, i wouldn't stay out there all day either. i was only out there about half an hour when hazel took the pic. it was just after i fed the kids. what the hell? there are insects in ohio. just not as many of them. it NEVER gets as cold in alabama as it does in ohio

was enjoying some quiet time on the balcony today but noticed the leaves are starting to turn color so fall is already starting here in spite of the warm weather. there must have been some fairly cool mornings

Have a nice day, all of you. everyone is brave once the danger has passed, or, before it comes. the latter is proven by my little trip when i was about 13. i used to tell everyone what i would do if i ever ran into a rattlesnake. i would screw it up. one day, we were at a friends house. i wanted to hit baseballs. i had the bat, but couldn't find a ball. i walked around the house three times. the fourth time, i came around a corner, and there, bigger than dallas, was a rattlesnake, coiled, and rattling at me. i forgot all about what i was going to do when i encountered a rattlesnake. i just dropped the bat and ran the other way

You were lucky you got away, Jim. Rattlers and copperheads are fast and very venomous ... as I'm sure you know.

It's bright and sunny here in Chiswick, but a bit cool. As it happens it's warmer outside than it is in.

You were lucky you got away, Jim. Rattlers and copperheads are fast and very venomous ... as I'm sure you know. yeah, i know all too well. we lived in the foothills for six years. during the summer, we had a rattler about once a week. one time, my dog rinty, got bit right between the eyes. he had a rattlesnake cornered, and was doing good. it would strike, and he'd jump back, go at it again, it would strike, and he'd jump back. then, my dad came behind him with a shovel to kill it, and rinty turned to see what he was doing, and that lapse, the snake nailed him. my dad killed it, and rinty grabbed it and shook it to kill it, like he would do if he got it. his head swelled about twice its size. we put a bottle of aspirin in a pound coffee can of water and made him drink it. we did that a couple of times for three days. he survived it, but, he was left blind in one eye, and was not as energetic after that.
