After watching this show, we've come up with the (probably over-optimistic) plan to see every county in the UK while living here. Would love to have input from you guys on upcoming counties...what they are "known for" and nice sites to see, etc. It's been really enjoyable so far...it's neat how each area has it's own unique "flavor" I guess, and history.
So far we've done (in chronological order):
1. Cornwall 2. Essex 3. Fife (Scotland) 4. Anglesey (Wales) 5. Kent 6. Somerset 7. Nottinghamshire 8. Pembrokeshire (Wales) 9. Bedfordshire 10. Carmarthenshire (Wales) 11. Ceredigion (Wales) 12. Gwynedd (Wales) 13. Caernarfonshire (Wales) 14. Cheshire 15. Yorkshire 16. Berkshire 17. Dumfriesshire (Scotland) 18. Kirkcudbrightshire (Scotland) 19. Wigtownshire (Scotland) 20. Ayrshire (Scotland) 21. Oxfordshire 22. Durham 23. Derbyshire 24. Flintshire (Wales) 25. Denbighshire (Wales) 26. Montgomeryshire (Wales) 27. Leicestershire 28. Lancashire 29. Radnorshire (Wales) 30. Brecknockshire (Wales) 31. Shropshire

Thanks for the welcome Maggie. Sussex does look nice...we did see a bit of it a couple years ago when we went to Hastings/Battle Abbey (and Dover Castle in Kent). It's definitely one of the counties at the top of the list to see, but will probably have to wait until the summer - so we can do an overnight trip when the kids are out of school. I think there are too many good sights there to just spend one day, and want to see it "properly" haha. We are on the Suffolk/Norfolk border. It has good points and bad...I think I like Cornwall better for instance after doing a vacation there, but it is close to London and Cambridge, with all the attractions there. We do have a three day weekend coming up - both at work and the kids at school - so starting to think about what to do then. One thought was to go to southwest Scotland - could maybe see Ayrshire, Wigtownshire, and Kirckcudbrightshire(?) all over the one weekend, since we've been to Ayrshire before and saw the better sights. It's so much driving to get there and back in three days though, think that might be best left for a four day weekend in the summer so I have a day of rest before going back to work. Was also thinking Lancashire or Wiltshire. I've been looking forward to seeing the Beetles sights in Liverpool, Blackpool tower, etc in Lancashire. In Wiltshire obviously Stonehenge and the other neolithic sights. Both of those counties seem like good options for a Saturday & Sunday trip, then can rest on Monday before going back to work/school .

Wow... I am tired just reading that Rachets! Hope you had a lovely 3 day weekend.
Another wonderful place is Northumberland. You can visit Lindisfarne (Holy Island) and the Farne Islands and see puffins!
Lots of castles to visit there and Hadrian's wall.

Haha...it is tiring! We only have a limited time here though...so have to see as much as we can while we have the chance. A lot of is just timing...we're going to miss some neat sights, for sure...but need to just prioritize things and see what we like most in each area. It's kind of like saying "we're going to see Paris in two or three days"...you can see the highlights, but realistically you could spend two or three days just in the Louvre, so you're not going to see everything. We'll definitely get to see a lot things though, and enjoy it...which is the point.

I saw a great deal on one of the travel websites/emails for a overnight stay in a cabin on a lake in Cumbria, but they were sold out for the one long weekend we had coming up . It will definitely be one of the counties we see too, it's another one that needs an overnight stay though...so would be best when the kids are out of school. Definitely looking forward to doing some walks there, along the nature trails and such.

Haven't been very good at keeping the post current, or thanking you guys for your suggestions - my apologies. We actually got to Yorkshire on the weekend of the 10th and 11th, and then berkshire for a day on Sunday. Both were nice - Windsor Castle really impressed me with the collections of China and then the arms/armour...very neat. I'll put up a few pictures...(unfortunately none from inside Windsor Castle as they wouldn't let you take pictures there).

We have a long weekend this weekend, so most likely going to Ayrshire and Dumfries and Galloway in Scotland. I'm not sure what the current counties are, because you've managed to totally confuse me on the counties thing...but I'm going to call it Ayrshire, Wigtownshire, Kirckudbrightshire, and Dumfries-shire on our list... .
